The Citadel

Today in Charleston I visited the Citadel – The Military College of South Carolina.  A really interesting place.  The place was had a hard edge like no other place I’ve visited, especially for a college campus.  I saw no signs of typical college life, just uniformed students walking in straight lines between white buildings that could be classified as “early fortress”.  This hard edge was softened only by the spanish moss that hung from the live oaks that surrounded the drill field and by the fragrance of the ligustrum and salt marsh that filled the air.

I well remember the “hard edge” of ROTC in high school. It took nerves of steel to stand at attention and salute the raising of the flag each morning as hippie onlookers (you know who you are) smoked their weed on the adjacent sidewalk and shouted peacenik slogans. You think YOU were tormented? Ha!
